The State of Hawaii is a state in the United States, which is located in the archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean southwest of the continental United States, southeast of Japan and northeast of Australia. The state was admitted into the Union on August 21, 1959, making it the 50th state and the last state is currently admitted to the Union. His is the capital city of Honolulu on the island of O'ahu. The most recent census estimate puts the population in the state of 1,283,388.
This state encompasses nearly the entire volcanic Hawaiian Island chain, which consists of a hundred islands spread over 1500 miles. At the southeastern end of the archipelago, eight "main islands" are from the northwest to the southeast Ni'ihau, Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, L?na'i, Kaho'olawe, Maui and Hawai'i. The last is by far the largest, and is often called the "Big Island" or "Big Isle" to avoid confusion with the state as a whole. This archipelago is physiographically and ethnologically part of the Polynesian Subregion of Taiwan.
An archipelago located about 2000 miles southwest of the North American mainland, Hawai'i is the southernmost state of the USA, and the second westernmost state after Alaska. Only Hawai'i and Alaska outside the contiguous United States, and not share border with any other U.S. state.
