About Rhode Island...
Rhode Island is a state in New England area of the United States. This is the smallest U.S. state by area. Rhode Island Connecticut is bordered on the west and Massachusetts to the north and east. Rhode Island also shares a water border with New York's Long Island to the southwest.
Despite the name, most of Rhode Island is, in fact, on the mainland. Rhode Island the name originates from the colonial-era name for what is today known as Aquidneck Island, which now includes the city of Newport and the towns of Middletown and Portsmouth, the largest of several islands in Narragansett Bay. Rhode Island was the first of the thirteen original colonies to declare independence from British rule and the last to ratify the Constitution of the United States. Rhode Island's official nickname is "The Ocean State", a reference to the state geography, as well as nearly one tenth of Rhode Island's inland area is covered with salt water. In addition, any resident of the state is more than thirty minutes away from the water's edge. Unofficially, and in other parts of the country, Rhode Island is called the Little Rhody.
