Washington is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Washington was carved from the western part of Washington Territory, which was ceded by Britain in 1846 by the Oregon Treaty as a settlement in the Oregon boundary dispute. She was admitted into the Union as the 42nd States in 1889. The United States Census Bureau estimated the state population was 6,549,224 by 2008.
Country is named after George Washington, 1st President of the United States. It is the only State name of the president. Residents are called "Washingtonians". Washington is often called Washington state or the State of Washington to distinguish it from the District of Columbia. However, Washingtonians always refers to the country only as a "Washington", and usually refers to the national capital as "Washington DC" or just "DC" Washington is the northwestern-most state of the contiguous United States. Its northern border lies mainly along the 49th parallel, and then across the border through the Sea Strait of Georgia, Haro Strait and Strait of Juan de Fuca with the Canadian province of British Columbia in the north. Washington Oregon border in the south, the Columbia River forming most of the borders and 46 parallel forming the eastern part of the southern boundary. In the east Washington borders Idaho, mainly related to the meridian running north from the confluence of the Snake River and Clearwater River, except for the southernmost section where the border follows the Snake River. In the west of Washington lies the Pacific Ocean. Washington was a territory of the Union during the American Civil War, though never actually participated in the war.
