About West Virginia...
West Virginia is a state in the Appalachian, mountain South and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States, Virginia by the borders in the south-east, Kentucky to the southwest, the northwest Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland and the Northeast. Capital and largest city is Charleston.
Historically the area now covers West Virginia is a contested territory, mostly Pennsylvania and Virginia. Some countries speculative companies, such as the Vandalia Company, and later the Ohio Company and Indiana companies were trying to legitimize their rights to land in parts of West Virginia and Kentucky, but failed. Along with the settlement of Pennsylvania and Virginia border dispute, which resulted in the creation of Kentucky, Kentuckians were "satisfied ... and residents of a large part of West Virginia were grateful."
After hauling the convention, West Virginia broke away from Virginia during the American Civil War and was admitted into the Union as a separate state 20th June 1863, and was a key Civil War border states. This is one of only two states formed during the U.S. Civil War along with Nevada, Utah, who is separated from the territory and is the only state to form by seceding from the confederate states.
The Census Bureau considers West Virginia part of the southern states because most of the south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Northern coating, however, stretches along the Ohio and Pennsylvania to West Virginia cities and transportation Weirton just across the border from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, while less than Bluefield seventy miles from North Carolina, and Harper's Ferry is considered part of the Washington DC metropolitan area. The unique position of West Virginia means that it is often included in various geographic regions, including the United States and Southeast, even the northeastern United States. Notably, it is the only state which entirely lies within the area served by the Appalachian Regional Commission, which is a common definition of "Appalachia."
The State is noted for its natural beauty, its historically significant logging and coal mining industry, labor and its history. It is also known for its wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, caving, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and hunting.
