About Washington, D.C... Washington, DC, formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, District or simply DC, is the capital of the United States, founded in 16th July 1790. City of Washington was originally a separate municipality within the territory of Columbia to the act of Congress in 1871 effectively merged the City and the territory into one entity called the District of Columbia. It is for this reason that the city, but legally named the District of Columbia, is known as the Washington, DC The city is located on the northern bank of the Potomac River and bordered by the countries in southwest Virginia and Maryland on the other side. District has a population of 591,833 resident, however, due to commuters from the surrounding suburbs, its population rises to over one million during the workweek. Washington Metropolitan Area, of which the District is a part, has a population of 5.3 million, the ninth largest metropolitan area in the country.

Article One of the United States Constitution prescribes federal district, distinct from the state, to serve as the permanent national capital. Centers for all three branches of the federal government of the United States are located in the District, like many of the nation monuments and museums. Washington, DC hosts 174 foreign embassies, as well as the headquarters of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Organization of American states, the Inter-American Development Bank, and Pan American Health Organization. Headquarters of other institutions, such as trade unions, lobbying groups and professional associations are also located in the District.

The United States Congress has supreme authority over Washington, DC, residents of the city, therefore, have less self-governance than residents of this state. District has not-at-large voting congressional delegate, but not Senators. DC residents could not vote in presidential elections to the ratification of the twenty-third amendment to the Constitution of the United States in 1961.
