Connecticut is the 29th most populous country, with 3.4 million inhabitants, and is ranked at 48th by the size of the space, making it the 4th most densely populated state. Called the "Constitution State" or "nut country" Connecticut has a long history dating from early colonial times and was influential in the development of the federal government. Connecticut is the 5th U.S. state to ratify the Constitution of the United States.
Connecticut first European settlers were Dutch and established a small short-lived settlement in present-day Hartford in the watershed in the Park and Connecticut Rivers called Huys de Hoop goede. In the beginning, half of Connecticut was the Dutch colony of New Netherland, who had a lot of land between the Connecticut and Delaware rivers.
The first major settlements were established in the 1630s by English. Thomas hooker led group followers overland from the Massachusetts Bay colony and founded what would become the Connecticut Colony; other settlers from Massachusetts founded the Saybrook Colony and the New Haven Colony. And Connecticut and New Haven Colony was founded on the Fundamental Rules of documents, is considered the first constitutions in North America. In 1662, three colonies were merged under a royal charter, making Connecticut a crown colony. This colony was one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution.
Connecticut has a temperate climate due to its long coastline on the Long Island Sound. This has given the state a strong maritime tradition. Modern Connecticut is also known for its wealth. In 18th and 19 century, Connecticut was ready access to raw materials which helped to develop a strong manufacturing industry, and financial organizations flourished: first insurance company in Hartford, then the resources in Fairfield County. This prosperity has helped give Connecticut the highest per capita income, Human Development Index, and the median household income in the country.
